About Triad Yoga Institute

Breathe, relax and evolve at Triad Yoga.

The Triad Yoga Institute was established in 1999 by co-owners Terry Brown and Jerry Cunningham. We have come a long way since our first studio opened on South Elm Street in downtown Greensboro, moving and expanding our studio space to our present location on West Market Street in January, 2011. We are fortunate to have many of the best yoga intructors in the area teaching at TYI, offering a variety of classes for every student of yoga from beginner to advanced including Gentle and Therapeutics and Exercise.

An upheld philosophy here at Triad Yoga is one of compassion, seeing the needs of the individual as the highest priority. We address physical needs and offer tools for the mind and spirit.

Our 200 hr and 300hr teaching training programs are recognized by Yoga Alliance.

The Triad Yoga Insitute’s short history is now blended into the long 6000 year history of yoga, and for that we are proud.

I'm new to yoga, where should I begin?

The beginner class is Level 1 where the basics are taught.  No experience is necessary to begin this class.  New students may begin at anytime.

I'm a beginner. Is Level 1 the only class for me?

There are a few other classes for the beginner student to consider. The Yoga Stretch class is an excellent class in addition to the Level 1 class. This class uses the practice of yoga to focus on the development of flexibility and is especially beneficial for a student that may be tight in any area of their body. The Gentle Yoga class is offered for students working with special limitations, such as injuries and limited range of motion, but may also be a nice class to take along with Level 1. Our senior beginners may also consider Senior Yoga which focuses on safe and gentle techniques to help with individual needs.

I've practiced in the past, where should I begin?

It is not easy to tell a student of yoga at what level they should be taking classes until our qualified instructors are able to see you in your practice. Starting in a Level 2 class would help you to understand what our expectations are of students at that level. Then, we can better help you decide at what level you should practice.

Should I have had any prior yoga experience?

Not at all. The Level 1 beginner class introduces the fundamental yoga postures, alignment principles, and breathing exercises that are easily learned by the most novice student

What is the difference in Level 1 and Gentle Yoga?

In Level 1 classes, the yoga poses are taught from the ground up, with each week’s class progressing on what was previously taught the week before. Gentle Yoga classes are kept at a slow and gentle pace, taking into consideration that some students need this type of class when working with physical challenges.

How long are the classes?

Depending on the class, class time will vary from 1 hour to 1 hour and 25 minutes.

What type of yoga do you teach?

We teach Hatha Yoga with attention to alignment. Some people call this Alignment-Based Yoga. Included in these classes along with the yoga poses are breath work, meditation, and relaxation. We also offer Power Yoga and some other specialty classes. Visit our Class Descriptions page to learn more.

What is alignment-based yoga?

When practicing the physical postures taught in yoga, called asanas, we ask that you pay close attention to how your body is aligned. The instructor will guide your attention to your body and how to contract some muscle groups and relax others. We also introduce the use of yoga props to help with the alignment of the body. This way of practice helps us to maintain the integrity of the pose so that we create a healthier body, protect our joints, improve our posture, and release muscle tension.

Can I come and try a class?

Yes. Our drop-in fee is $13.00 to visit a regularly scheduled class. We also offer a monthly free Community Class that is an opportunity to visit us and try a free class. This mixed level class is offered the second Sunday of every month at 1:00PM.

Do you have a changing room?

You are more than welcome to use our restrooms to change in.

What do I bring to class?

We provide all props. If you have a yoga sticky mat, we suggest you bring your own, but we have plenty for everyone if you don’t.

What should I do if I'm late for class?

Sometimes life gets in the way! Of course we encourage you to arrive a few minutes early to class. If you are late, make sure that the centering practice at the beginning of class is complete before entering the studio. Also, be sure to unroll your mat quietly.

I haven't exercised in awhile, how will I do?

You will be fine. Yoga is non-competitive and your instructor will help encourage you to work at a level that is comfortable for you. You’ll never be expected to do something that your body is not ready for.

What are the ages of your students?

15 years to seniors. Some 13-14 year olds have reached a level of maturity to study along with adults. We suggest you contact the studio to discuss this with an instructor as some 13-14 years old students need a more active practice than what we are offering to adults.

Do you provide childcare?

No, space does not permit. And, we feel that your time at the studio is more beneficial if you can come and leave your children with friends or family. We want this experience to be completely yours. If your children are on the location, you will not be able to completely detach from them.

What can practicing yoga do for me?

Yoga can help with losing weight, toning the body, relaxation, gaining strength, and increased flexibility. However, what you can “do” for you can only be determined with a regular practice. We encourage students to recognize their goals and keep them in mind throughout their practice, realizing that everyone is unique, and what happens for one person may be different from someone else.

What do classes cost?

Please refer to the Registration Info page on the website.

I signed up for 12 classes, how often do I attend?

When you purchase a package of classes, you can use them as frequently as you like. You can purchase a package of 12 classes and use them up in 4 weeks by coming to class 3 times a week or attend classes once a week for 12 weeks. Our class packages have a 90 day expiration from first class used so make sure to use your classes within that 90 day period.

How many times a week should I attend class?

That will be up to you. To experience the benefits of yoga, you will want to expand your practice from your weekly class to include a home practice. If you are having difficulty developing a practice on your own, you may wish to consider taking classes 2 times per week. It takes time to develop the motivation to practice at home, but if you stick with it, soon you will look forward to time on your mat!

Can I come and watch a class?

We don’t encourage coming to watch classes out of respect for the students participating in the class. Students become uncomfortable when they know they are being watched. We want to provide a comfortable atmosphere for our students. We suggest you come to one of the free classes, because you will get more understanding of what yoga can do for you rather than by just watching.

How do I register for workshops?

You can register for workshops several ways – in person by stopping by the studio, over the telephone, by mail (address on Contact Us page), or online at www.triadyoga.com.

I'm very flexible, do I have to start at Level 1?

You are fortunate that you have flexibility, and that will definitely help you in the yoga poses. However, since yoga is about more than flexibility, we feel that anyone new to the practice should start at the beginning. We teach basic yoga postures and alignment principles in the beginner classes. This is necessary to understand before going on to higher levels. We all need to learn how to ground in the poses, find the correct form and the alignment, and understand how to breathe in the poses.

I want an more active, not meditative class.

Classes where the postures are held for longer periods of time can be as challenging as classes where you flow in and out of poses. Holding poses creates an internal heat and elevates the heart rate. It’s important to understand the postures and alignment principles before going to a class where you flow very quickly in and out of poses. This knowledge will reduce the risk of injury.
